The beginning of the marathon

Shell Eco-MarathonA simple argument between employees of one of Shell Oil's research laboratories, back in 1939, led to the birth of a new competition called "Shell Mileage Marathon". The objective was quite simple, to see which vehicle could go the farthest distance on the least amount of fuel. Initially struggling to travel more than 50 miles with one gallon of fuel (about 18 km with one liter of fuel), the teams involved in this challenge now aim to brake the 4000 km/L mark. Almost 70 years later the challenge continues and hundreds of teams from around the world converge in several events held all over the world, in what now is a showcase of advanced technology, in search of fuel economy.
